Abstract

This research intends to identify the importance of Malaysian Sign Language (BIM) in the teaching of Perkara Asas Fardhu Ain (PAFA) among the deaf community. BIM is the main language used by the deaf community in Malaysia. The use of BIM among the deaf community is for communicating, understanding and conveying messages. Knowledge and comprehension in PAFA is crucial to mould and produce practising Muslims with knowledge. Thus, this article seeks to identify the extent to which BIM is important during the teaching and learning of PAFA among the deaf community. Data were collected through interviews with five deaf people who are experts in BIM and have experience in teaching PAFA to deaf people. The results suggested that there were three important reasons for using BIM in PAFA teaching and learning: for the deaf community to understand the content of PAFA, to establish interest among the community to study PAFA dan to ease the communication process during the teaching and learning sessions.
