Abstract

This study investigated the influence of teachers’ competency in the teaching of History toward the students’ academic achievement in the subject. Three aspects which included the multiple skilled teaching strategies (KMST), the skill of learning evaluation (KMPP) and the skill of using ICT (KPTM) were studied. The study used survey research design to find out the influence of teachers’competency in the teaching of History on students’ academic achivement. Form Four students from a secondary school in Samarahan Disctrict, Sarawak were given the questionnaires. The sample involved 60 students (23 male and 37 female). Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for Windows (SPSS) Version 22 was used for data analysis.The study revealed that a majority of the History teachers mastered the multiple skilled teaching Strategies (KMST) and the skill of learning evaluation (KMPP). The t-test showed that the teachers’ skills did not differ in terms of gender but were significantly different in terms of the stream. Correlation analyses showed no significant relationships existed between teachers’ competency in the teaching of History and students’ academic achievement and the multiple skilled teaching strategies and the skill of learning evaluation except for the skill of using ICT. To conclude, action should be taken to upgrade teacher knowledge to improve teaching skill to produce excellent students who understand the importance of learning History in their daily lives.
