The Use of Betel Leaf Among the Malaysian Indians

Abstract

Piper betel Linn (betel vine; family Piperaceae) is also known as ‘Vettriliai’ in Tamil is one of the most important plant in Asia. As the leaves, roots and stems are all used for medicinal purposes, it is also an important medical agent in the various traditional and folk systems of medicine in Southeast Asia countries. This paper discussed about the uses of Piper betel Linn among Indians in Malaysia. Indians brought their culture of using the Piper-Betel to Malaysia. It has been found that the heart-shaped leave of Piper betel Linn is used in Indian’s wedding functions, prayers and also as medicine. This research has found that Indians in Malaysia using the Piper-Betel in their daily life widely. Piper-Betel is being used as medicine for everyone.

‘பைப்ரேஸியே’ குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த வெற்றிலை ஆங்கிலத்தில் Piper betel Linn என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆசியாவின் மிக முக்கியமான தாவரங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று. இதன் இலைகள், வேர்கள், காம்புகள் என அனைத்தும் மருத்துவ நோக்கங்களுக்காகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுவதால், தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியா நாடுகளில் உள்ள பல்வேறு பாரம்பரிய மற்றும் நாட்டுப்புற மருத்துவ முறைகளில் இஃது ஒரு முக்கியமான மருத்துவப் பொருளாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. இந்த ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரை மலேசிய இந்தியர்களிடையே வெற்றிலையின் பயன்பாட்டைப் பற்றி விளக்குகிறது. மலாயாவுக்கு வந்த இந்தியர்கள் தங்கள் பண்பாட்டில் கலந்த இந்த வெற்றிலையின் பயன்பாட்டையும் இங்கு வேறூன்ற செய்தனர். இதய வடிவிலான இந்த இலை திருமண விழாக்கள், இறைவழிபாடு மற்றும் மருந்தாக இன்றளவும் மலேசிய இந்தியர்களால் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டு வருவது கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது. குழந்தைகள் முதல் பெரியவர்கள் வரை அனைவருக்கும் வெற்றிலை மருந்தாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.
