The Early Temple Culture in the Life of the Tamils (தமிழர் வாழ்வில் தொடக்கக் காலக் கோவில் கலாச்சாரம்)

Abstract

The temple culture has occupied a significance place in the life of the Tamils since the ancient times. The evolution of the temples has progressed Hinduism and its mode of worship. Beginning from the tree worship, it has developed a long way to a constructed temple adhering to the basic requirements of the religion. The objectives of this paper are to elucidate the meaning of various terms related to a temple and analyse the early evolution of temple worship and its effects. The qualitative approach undertaken encompasses the summative content analysis. This is suitable as the early evolution of temples and the traditional ways of worship pertaining to the cultural life of the Tamils are interpreted using words and the context of the same theme. The results show that the temple culture has a prominent position in the life of the Tamils. The early evolution of the temples was made possible by the rulers who undertook the construction of the temples with well-planned architecture that is still grandeur for the religion. However, temples are the basic attraction for the ordinary devotees who are quite incomprehensible of the philosophical aspects of the religion. The main impact of the temple worship has attracted the Tamils not only to offer prayers but simultaneously promote goodwill and unity among the human beings

கோயில் கலாச்சாரம் பண்டைய காலங்களிலிருந்து தமிழர்களின் வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரு முக்கிய இடத்தைப் பிடித்துள்ளது. கோயில்களின் பரிணாமம் இந்து மதத்தையும் அதன் வழிபாட்டு முறையையும் முன்னேற்றியுள்ளது. மர வழிபாட்டிலிருந்து தொடங்கி, மதத்தின் அடிப்படைத் தேவைகளுக்கு ஏற்ப கட்டப்பட்ட கோவிலுக்கு நீண்ட தூரம் முன்னேறியுள்ளது. ஒரு கோயில் தொடர்பான பல்வேறு சொற்களின் பொருளை தெளிவுபடுத்துவதும், கோவில் வழிபாட்டின் ஆரம்ப பரிணாமத்தையும் அதன் விளைவுகளையும் பகுப்பாய்வு செய்வதே இந்த ஆய்வின் நோக்கங்கள். மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட தரமான அணுகுமுறை சுருக்கமான உள்ளடக்க பகுப்பாய்வை உள்ளடக்கியது. கோயில்களின் ஆரம்ப பரிணாம வளர்ச்சியும், தமிழர்களின் கலாச்சார வாழ்க்கை தொடர்பான வழிபாட்டு முறைகளும் சொற்களையும் அதே கருப்பொருளின் சூழலையும் பயன்படுத்தி விளக்கப்படுவதால் இது பொருத்தமானது. கோயில் கலாச்சாரம் தமிழர்களின் வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரு முக்கிய இடத்தைப் பெற்றுள்ளது என்பதை முடிவுகள் காட்டுகின்றன. கோயில்களின் ஆரம்பகால பரிணாமம், திட்டமிடப்பட்ட கட்டிடக்கலை மூலம் கோயில்களின் கட்டுமானத்தை மேற்கொண்ட ஆட்சியாளர்களால் சாத்தியமானது, அது இன்னும் மதத்திற்கு பெருமை அளிக்கிறது. இருப்பினும், மதத்தின் தத்துவ அம்சங்களை மிகவும் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாத சாதாரண பக்தர்களுக்கு கோயில்கள் அடிப்படை ஈர்ப்பாகும். கோவில் வழிபாட்டின் முக்கிய தாக்கம் தமிழர்களை பிரார்த்தனை செய்வதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஒரே நேரத்தில் மனிதர்களிடையே நல்லெண்ணத்தையும் ஒற்றுமையையும் ஊக்குவிக்கிறது
